Spring

(Originally posted May 7, 2014)

It’s here, right?!?! I think it might be as good as it gets this year. It’s May, we’ve rebelled against starting a fire in the wood furnace. We still have hot water (I think) which is good since our fuel oil is empty. The peel and stick tiles are falling off the shower wall, but whatever, life is good on the farm.

Most of the snow is gone! I think I found a couple rhubarb plants, which is awesome!

Last weekend we were finally able to get out and do some work outside in the garden area. The previous owner had a nice big garden but wasn’t able to garden the last 5 years, so it needed some work. The fence is 6 feet tall but all of the posts are rotted and after last weeks windstorm, a couple fell over, so that will need to be replaced.

We started to do some cleaning up of the area around the garden as well, since we plan on putting our chicken coop near it. We started to clean up the slope by the driveway and found shards of metal and glass and realized it was likely the farms old burn pile. We cleaned and picked up as much as possible and decided to make a retaining wall to contain the rest!

silly us….
All the tires!

We also found a bunch of old tires in the stand of trees and other random garbage. Since we intend to spend a lot of time down there, we wanted it to be a nice place to hang out. I am super excited to get the hammock out once it warms up a bit.
The OCD kicked in and we decided to pick up all the stick in the area and created a huge burn pile. Anyone want to come over for a fire?!?! It better happen soon because that pile is in my garden!

Garden fire… just kidding, we moved it..

It was a really nice weekend, I felt really productive!

The chicken tractor (temporary chicken housing til the coop is built) is 90% complete. The chickens are coming next Thursday!

On Sunday, I decided to learn how to use the nail gun and made a potting bench out of our resource pile (got that term from a coworker, I don’t have to call it Kit’s hoarding pile anymore)! I know it’s not perfect but I am pretty proud and it was free!
