Demo… it just happens

(Originally posted Feb. 4, 2014)

I had all intentions of having a nice relaxing Sunday at home. I thought I would do a little cleaning, maybe help clean up the basement a little and do some reading. Kit had been working on taking out the bricks from the cold storage room in the back corner of the basement.

While it was kind of a neat room, it was small and short (the rest of the basement has 9 and a half  foot ceilings) and we wanted to move the utilities and laundry room to that area. I can’t take any credit when it comes to taking out that wall. It was a double layer of brick, I took 3 whacks at it and handed the sledgehammer back to Kit. It was a lot of work on his part, he did a good job, and it was a very messy job, so he was working on cleaning that all up, while I made breakfast (Smokehaus bacon and eggs, yum). After we ate, I slowly got ready to help Kit finish cleaning (at least that’s what I thought I was going to do). I finally made my way to the basement, and started to dust everything and move a few things out of the way for cleaning. The we decided to get rid of the wood paneling that was falling off the wall anyway, and then we decided we probably didn’t need the rest of the walls down there and started to rip everything down! It took me most of the day to become OK with doing demo, I couldn’t get it through my thick skull that we were starting demo, even while I was in the mist of the process. I decided I need to get better at taking mid-project pictures too so I can give you all up close views of the process. But, I didn’t think time, so I will just give you the end product of the demo day.

Here is the view of the where the cold storage room used to be, from the laundry room. We removed all the wall around the stairs so no we have one big open room in the basement, along with a side room we use for the dogs, which is currently being used as temporary storage.

View of the laundry room from the new utility room, the dogs always need to be in the picture.

Under the stairs view of the fuel tank and water pumps.

Fuel oil tank, water pumps and furnace, all being removed or replaced! it will open up the basement a ton!
‘New’ laudry room walls and view of an unpainted beam! We have 2 beams in the basement right now but most have been painted either white or a blueish color. It would be great to try to get them back to wood.
I found some graffiti on the wood walls from maybe the 60’s or 70’s. Most of it was hard to make out, but my favorite was the one below!

‘Doreen is a ish, a pig, and cow and a monkey.’ At least that is my best guess as to what it says, poor Doreen.

After all the demo, we were dirty and tired but we stacked more wood. Don’t get wood delivered mid winter if you can help it. But it’s a good project to get done, I think we have one more day of stacking wood and then we will be done!

Yesterday was a beautiful day out, finally, and we had just gotten out property lines surveyed so we took the dogs out for a run! Nice way to end the day!

Last weekend, we went to watch the Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. It was COLD and I was a stupid Minnesotan and thought I was hardy and didn’t dress appropriately, so I had to cut it a little short and warm up in the truck while Kit watched the rest of the dogs run by. Those dogs are so happy running, it’s fun to watch!
